Blepharoplasty

For both men and women, age-related changes around the eyes are typical. The upper eyelid can sag, in old age, even to such extent that it can interfere with vision. Extreme sagging of the skin of the lower eyelid can also make it difficult to close the eyelids, causing a variety of problems.

Of course, aesthetic complaints appear much earlier. Eyelid surgery, often combined with a facelift, can make an ageing face look significantly younger.

In the case of the upper eyelid, the irritating excess skin is often only one component of the complex problem, and sagging of the brow arch and fatty tissue accumulation often contribute to the situation.

For a good result in such cases it is not enough to remove the skin; the procedure must be complemented by a brow lift with the removal of fatty tissue.

Information

How does the blepharoplasty procedure work?

The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia. Before the surgery, the markings are made and the surgical plan is set up. Then, in the operating theatre, an anaesthetic injection is given into the area, which can cause an uncomfortable, stabbing, tight feeling. After that, there is no more pain.

During the procedure, excess skin is removed, including a muscle strip and excess internal fat if necessary. After thorough haemostasis, the wound is closed with a very thin suture. The surgery is concluded by the application of a special bandage, which is recommended to be left on for a week. The procedure takes between 30 minutes and an hour.

After the surgery

Following the blepharoplasty, you will be kept in our clinic for applying ice packs and a brief observation.

If you wish, we are ready to give you a sedative before the procedure, but in this case, please arrive accompanied.

There are a number of conditions that can occur after surgery that you should know about:

  • Temporary discomfort
  • Swelling or bruising with a feeling of “tightness” in the eyelid area
  • Excessive lacrimation and photosensitivity
  • Temporary dryness of the eye
  • Burning sensation
  • Itch
Healing

Topical eye ointment is recommended twice daily for 3 days, after which artificial tears are recommended. Ice can be applied to the eyelids intermittently for the first 24-48 hours. Sutures can be removed after a week. Patients should sleep with their head lifted for two nights and shower the next day, their bandages can be wet but not soaked. The swelling should disappear after 2 weeks, however, you can expect to return to work in 5-10 days. Contact lenses can be used again after two weeks. Consuming alcohol, strenuous activity and wearing make-up should be stopped for three weeks after the surgery. Anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents can be restarted on day 2.

Results

Long-term results can last for several years, and some patients may maintain a youthful appearance for a long time. For maximum results, patients should follow the post-operative instructions. As people age naturally, sun protection can help preserve the results.
